Dracula

Kate Myers (2025)

With support from the FRFF Grant, I was able to create makeup and practical effects for a local high school production of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Through experimentation with new mediums, ways of making, and processes, I worked with the Apollo-Ridge Drama Club and its staff, Alex and Katrina Dixon, to create multiple props, on stage effects, and makeup looks to support the production. The roughly two hour long show was performed several times over the span of a week in front of a live audience. I created a skeletal hand prop out of latex and foam, did test makeups using mold making techniques to create silicone prosthetic appliances, applied out of the kit makeup to actors, used liquid latex and alcohol paints to simulate open wounds, and finally worked with the director and actors to accomplish several different blood gags throughout the performance.

I was also able to carry over what I learned from this project into my personal art practice, using skills and techniques I learned with the tools provided to me by the FRFF grant into short films, other live performances, and 2d works. Through this project, I learned how to work with directors and student actors, and how to overcome difficulties such as working with actors with sensitive skin, creating believable, real time, special effects in front of a live audience, and more.

This project was made possible with support from FRFF Microgrant #2025-006. Additional images available here.
