Caroline Record‘s SHE is a performance and installation concerned with streaming flows of language. Caroline, as “Stenographer/Muse,” sings, while a thermal receipt printer spools everything she types. The printer continuously spews paper at a constant rate, adding and emitting letters as she types them. Thus the printer subverts the standard format of typography and expresses typed language as a reflection on the rhythm of thought and the physical act of typing.
In the self-standing (installation) version, the printer continuously spools all of the sentences from “Anna Karenina” that begin with the word “She”. Caroline implemented SHE using OpenFrameworks (an open-source C++ arts-engineering toolkit), on the RaspberryPi microcontroller.
SHE was supported by a microgrant from the Frank-Ratchye Fund for Art @ the Frontier (FRFAF)— an endowment, managed by the STUDIO, founded to encourage the creation of innovative artworks by the faculty, students and staff of Carnegie Mellon University. With this fund, the STUDIO seeks to develop a cache of groundbreaking projects created at CMU — works that can be described as “thinking at the edges” of the intersection of disciplines.
