Jelly Invasion

Stacey Cho (2023)

How can XR technologies help transform conventional audience-gallery relationships in institutional museum settings? Can Mixed Reality connect physical architectures of institutions to virtual environments in responsive ways?

This project challenges the norm of simply viewing an artwork and walking away. By allowing the users to become performers themselves and explore the entire gallery space as a narrative playground, this interactive MR experience embodies all of the various alter ego character projects I have worked on over the years at CMU.

From my main persona character of Motobunny to new characters like Jelly Aliens, evil scientists Stacey and Andrew, and Director Catsy, this project is truly a complete Alter Ego mash up universe!

This project was displayed at the Miller ICA gallery (Pittsburgh) for a duration of 2.5 weeks, with more than 300 participants able to enjoy the experience.  Developed on Unity for Quest 3 headsets with contributor Andrew Knowles.

This project was made possible with support from the 2024 Round of the XRTC Creative Research Grant, the XRTC and the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry.
