Televised Distance

(2002)

Noriyuki Fujimura’s Televised Distance is an interactive art project that suggests a potential alternative model of communication technology. The artist created a TV-phone like system which has a dimension of depth so that anyone who engages the medium can sense how far his/her opponent is while that person communicates through the screen. This 3D system, requiring the use of red and blue lensed glasses, was shown at First night Pittsburgh 2003 in downtown Pittsburgh.

Fujimura states, “Even though we have the capability to communicate over long distances, we are losing the senses of “the body” when using modern technology. In the future, can we design a medium that overcomes that?”
