Violin-Family Bow 3D Scan Database

Joe Bates, Aleena Akbar (2026)
Joseph Bates Masters of Music (Violin) student in the the CMU School of Music is also a violin-family bow restorer and repair tech. Research into bow making finds that there are no useable scans of violin family bows for reference use by experienced or aspiring technicians and restorers. While there are books of photographs, these are expensive, rare, and often have limited views of each bow. The STUDIO is supporting Joseph’s research with use of the Artek Spider II 3D scanner (previously used by our Oracle Bones Course) towards the publication of an open source bow database.
The project has many supporters including the loan of a 18th c. bow by Andrew Fouts of Chatham Baroque to be scanned for the collection.

Please contact the studio if you are interested in contributing to this research project.
