Sprout: Designed to Last
Aimee Li (2024)
Children are eager to make, but their creations often end in landfills. Sprout is a table that is built, modified, and cherished from childhood.
How can we get children to think about how everyday things are made, and to have the agency to create? Sprout is a modular, height-adjustable desk that’s meant to be built by kids. The table provides a learning opportunity through the building process, by mimicking existing fastening methods (nuts and bolts). Additionally, it’s made to not look like a ‘toy’, but a ‘real, big thing’ that has it’s place in the home. Designed as a modular system, the table affords creative freedom, yet remains simple enough to learn quickly. Finally, as a table that’s meant to last, Sprout holds the sentimental value of making with others.
