Phonetics

Stephen Michaels (2019)

PHONETICS, solo show by Stephen Michaels at The Frame Gallery, Carnegie Mellon University. The show took place on 10/26-10/28 and showcased a new body of work by Stephen Michaels. The show featured costumes, videos, photos, drawings, sculptures, and a book. Michael’s wrote regarding the exhibition:

“This exhibition consisted of photos, drawings, garments, a book, sculptures, and videos. It centered around an extended essay and collection of poetry I wrote entitled The Phonetics of Mythology. This writing interrogated my own art-making process as well as the larger theoretical connections between mythology and image-making. This exhibition encapsulated the main tenants of my work up to this point. These themes include costume and performativity, the body and abstraction, drawing as a means of creating language, mythology and Jungian archetypes, queerness, and diagrammatic sculpture…”
