Grand Virtual Experiences

Matthew Lucien Komar (2020)

Matthew Lucien Komar created three distinct immersive virtual reality environments for “Grand Virtual Experiences.” This research was supported by microgrant #2020-005 from the Frank-Ratchye Fund for Art @ the Frontier.

1. The Mind of Cornelius Regent:
Platform: Oculus Rift and Oculus Quest.

Welcome to Cornelius Alistair Regent’s Mudge Quad! You’re free to interact with the furniture. Be sure to visit the Regent’s very own Ancient Roman Villa on your way out!

2. The Utopia of Cornelius Regent:
Platform: Oculus Rift and Oculus Quest.

Like in the previous experience, visitor start in Regent’s Mudge Quad. To exit the room, you go through the elevator doors in the hallway leading out of his room and bump into the down button. Once you go outside you are free to walk around, but please mind the bottomless pit!
This experience was exhibited at the Frame Gallery.

3. Fantastical Delights:
Platform: PC, Oculus Rift and Oculus Quest.

Visitor is immersed in a virtual reinterpretation of Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights with all its recognizable landmarks. The visitor is free to walk around the world as desired.
If the visitor can not physically walk around, they can teleport between places of interest.
This project was originally meant to be exhibited in the Beaux Arts Ball of 2020 (delayed until further notice due to COVID-19).

The project was made in collaboration with Joyce Zhang, the Game Creation Society and the 15112 programming class.
