Explorations in SideFX Houdini

Alyssa Lee and Lukas Hermann (2020)

As an inquiry into contemporary powerful digital tools, CMU students Alyssa Lee and Lukas Hermann explored the use of SideFX Houdini for their respective disciplines. Alyssa, a junior in the Bachelor’s of Computer Science and Art program, focused on animation and simulation, along with representation. Lukas, a third-year undergraduate in the School of Architecture, explored data visualization, form finding, and methods of 3D printing. Throughout the process, the two shared references, tips, and inspirations. As a result, the two now have a deeper understanding of workflows used by the professional VFX industry, and how they can be adapted to projects at scale. Lee and Hermann’s investigation was supported by Microgrant #2020-002 from the Frank-Ratchye Fund for Art @ the Frontier.
