Entropy+ Catalog by Kathy Zhang :: Supported by FRFAF (#2021-045) from STUDIO for Creative Inquiry on Vimeo.

Kathy Zhang is a CMU undergraduate studying towards a hybrid Bachelor of Humanities and Arts (BHA) degree in Visual Art and Environmental and Sustainability Studies. Her Entropy+ Catalog is a comprehensive digital inventory of everything sold at Entropy+, Carnegie Mellon’s primary convenience store. Conclusions from the Entropy+Catalog along with personal experience with sustainability at the university create a call-to-action for CMU to create an Office of Sustainability.

Zhang writes: “Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is a private university located in Pittsburgh, PA. The university often touts its commitment to sustainability and paints itself as a leader in the field. As an undergraduate CMU student who has been involved in making the campus a more sustainable space though, I have had a different experience than what is advertised. Responsibility for sustainability is often pushed onto the shoulders of students, students who do not have the time or resources to make substantial, systemic change at the university. Instead to looking to individual students to lead the fight, CMU needs to do better itself and recognize its own responsibility in the fight to create a more sustainable, just space.”

Entropy+ Catalog was supported by a microgrant (#2021-045) from the Frank-Ratchye Fund for Art @ the Frontier.
