Degendering CMU Restrooms

NMA (2020)

“Degendering CMU Restrooms” is a guerrilla public signage campaign by College of Fine Arts undergraduate, NMA. The project was supported with Microgrant #2020-043 from the Frank-Ratchye Fund for Art @ the Frontier. NMA writes:

CMU bathrooms cannot have a little gender, even as a treat. This project de-genders CMU restrooms by placing high-strength adhesive plastic stickers over the current signage. The new signs are gender-neutral, but still compliant with ADA requirements, e.g.  including Braille. I document the signs when they are applied, and I document them when they are taken down. When they are taken down I replace them. I manufactured a run of 500 signs.
