Workshop Description
Participants are invited to create an installation using various e-waste devices, spots are limited!
Note to participants: bring your own e-waste, ancient devices, CRT screens, old videos games, hand held electronics, kids electronic toys, game controllers and more.
This workshop is based on Ben’s ReFunct Media project. This project initiated by Benjamin Gaulon was re-iterated over many versions, many of which were collaborations with Karl Klomp, Gijs Gieskes and Tom Verbruggen from 2010 to 2019.
This workshop will produce multimedia sculptures that (re)use numerous “obsolete” electronic devices (digital and analogue media players and receivers). We will hack, misuse and combine devices into a complex chain of elements. To use an ecological analogy they will “interact” in different symbiotic relationships such as mutualism, parasitism and commensalism.
Voluntarily complex and unstable, “ReFunct Media Project” isn’t proposing answers to the questions raised by e-waste, planned obsolescence and sustainable design strategies. Rather, as an installation it experiments and explores unchallenged possibilities of ‘obsolete’ electronic and digital media technologies and our relationship with technologies and consumption.
