Join us for an artist talk from Kaffe Matthews on Wednesday March 20th at 5:30PM in the STUDIO!
Kaffe Matthews plays alchemical noise music created live with the outcomes of several custom designed instruments including the Ripley — an instrument occupied with the generation and processing of all colors of noise, designed through alchemical discoveries made by the British alchemist George Ripley in the 15th century. Colours, lightning, square waves, vomited wings and feathers, mashed through clocks and salt and fed by mercury. This event is made possible with support from the 2023-2024 Sylvia and David Steiner Speaker Series.
Matthews is a pioneering music maker who since 1995 has been making works live with space, data, things and place to make new electroacoustic compositions worldwide. Violin, theremin, star maps, NASA scientists, sharks, children, solo walks and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra have all sourced this growing body of works for sites such as concert hall, city streets, basement club, gallery, living room, empty shop and the human body. The physical experience of music for the maker and listener has always been central to her approach and to this end she has also invented some unique interfaces; the sonic armchair, the sonic bed and the sonic bike, that not only enable new approaches to composition but give immediate ways in to unfamiliar sound and musics for wide ranging audience.
