Sonifying Architecture Working Group

(2026)

This working group investigates the acoustic properties of unusually sonified materials including polymers and 1099 steel.

The group held its first meeting on September 30th 2026 working with the “jellycube” project by member Stella Shen as a playful starting point of study. Stella is currently completing her PhD in Computational Design at Carnegie Mellon Architecture. Jellycube  programmable shape-changing material that unlocks capacity unknown to conventional architected materials with embedded cross-dimensional mobility.

Seth Cluett (CMU Music Assistant Professor of Sound Media) and Dr. Pooja Maury (Post-Doc Scholar in Material Science) brought their expertise in material structure and architectural acoustics to the activation of Jellycube using the STUDIO’s sign wave vibration motor (donated by Mimi Wertheimer – CMU Gelfen Center).

The discussion has led to an open ended research collaboration exploring

  • transmission / absorption of 3d printed metal alloys
  • acoustic properties of internal lattice structures of 3d printed polymers
  • programmable shape changing materials as analog signal filters for electronic sound

Please contact the studio if you’re interested in participating.
