Advanced Comics Student Anthology
John Peña (2025)In the spring of 2025, sixteen students from Carnegie Mellon’s School of Art’s Advanced Comics Workshop course created a collaborative comics anthology. At the outset of the course, instructor John Peña led students through a series of in-class workshops and critiques designed to improve each student’s visual storytelling skills. Then, each student created a production schedule to produce a long-form comic over the course of twelve weeks. Some students revisited old works and improved upon them. While others created entirely new projects where they experimented and explored unique themes and designs that helped them build out their worlds more fully. What they created was a thought-provoking, playful, grotesque, lighthearted, and reflective comics collection that when taken together, form a rich landscape that highlights the students’ distinct voices, styles, and inner worlds.
