The New Clinic for Sensory Vitality was a transient clinic that existed for three hours on April 19th, 2014 in Pittsburgh, PA. This event was the culmination of over a decade of intense research, carried out by an international team of leading medical specialists and Dhamma practitioners. The clinic consisted of five sensory treatments:
1. Clinic Overview (a guided audio tour)
2. Cyclops Walking Tour
3. Bubble Sound Massage
4. Ant Walking Tour
5. Evaluation
The patients were evaluated at each station, and interviewed by an elder at the end of their sessions. Post-completion interviews revealed unforeseen shifts in sensory vitality. One patient grimly described a “dimensionless plane” in which “vast, throbbing structures…multiply and disintegrate at random” (artist rendering included below).
The New Clinic for Sensory Vitality was supported by a microgrant from the Frank-Ratchye Fund for Art @ the Frontier (FRFAF)— an endowment founded to encourage the creation of innovative artworks by the faculty, students and staff of Carnegie Mellon University. With this fund, the STUDIO seeks to develop a cache of groundbreaking projects created at CMU — works that can be described as “thinking at the edges” of the intersection of disciplines.
