Center for Restroom Equality

Heather Cowie, Max Emiliano Gonzales (2014)

The Center for Restroom Equality is a public installation project by Heather Cowie and Max Emiliano Gonzales. For the installation, tampon disposal boxes were mounted in men’s public restrooms across Pittsburgh, to call attention to issues of transphobia. The project aims to highlight the lack of even the most basic accommodations for trans and nonbinary people in public spaces.

The Center for Restroom Equality was supported by a microgrant from the Frank-Ratchye Fund for Art @ the Frontier (FRFAF)— an endowment founded to encourage the creation of innovative artworks by the faculty, students and staff of Carnegie Mellon University. With this fund, the STUDIO seeks to develop a cache of groundbreaking projects created at CMU — works that can be described as “thinking at the edges” of the intersection of disciplines.

Heather Cowie and Max Emiliano Gonzales are both undergraduates in the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University.
